site + store + shelf

Sore Sore’s Shelf is a Jakarta based multidisciplinary platform through which we create our prints and publications as a materialisation of our desire to convey the self in relations to the natural world, from its rawest sentiments to the printed matter you hold in your hands.

The beauty of human experience is that every one of us have our own stories, and we believe that every one of them is worth sharing to the world. Talk to us through our e-mail address if you'd like to collaborate with us!

We got an exciting news from one of our ‘Even as a Shadow, Even as a Dream’ contributor, Marie! Marie recently released her new photobook, ‘Eden’, published by Elephant Corridor.

Marie's photobook "Eden," published by Corridor Elephant, delves deeply into the theme of intimacy, inviting viewers into a mysterious realm where landscapes, the human body's geography, and personal narratives intertwine. The title itself, "Eden," evokes a sense of a private and concealed space, akin to an inner world.

In her interview about the publication, Marie provides insights into her creative process and motivations:

Why Black and White?

Marie explains that she has a deep fondness for black and white photography due to its nostalgic and timeless qualities. She perceives this aesthetic as offering a unique perspective on reality, one that captures nuances and subtleties in shades of gray that might otherwise go unnoticed by the naked eye.

Why Choose Self-Portrait?

The decision to focus on self-portraiture is described as an introspective journey. Through photographing herself, Marie aims to reclaim her body and explore aspects of self. This process becomes a quest for understanding and acceptance of her physical form, as well as an exploration of personal transformations, fears, and dreams. Her self-portraits reveal fragments of her identity and pose enigmatic questions about the self.

How Do You Construct Your Series?

Marie draws inspiration from literature, particularly from authors like Marguerite Duras. She approaches her photographic series as visual poems, meticulously crafting narratives that delve into the language of the body and its interaction with space and environment. Her work explores how the body inhabits and leaves traces in nature, reflecting on the imprints it makes and the stories it tells through its presence.

Through "Eden," Marie invites viewers not only to appreciate the aesthetics of black and white photography but also to engage with profound themes of identity, intimacy, and the intricate relationship between the human form and its surroundings. Her approach combines artistic vision with introspective depth, creating a dialogue between the visual and the poetic aspects of her work.

‘Eden’ is now available to purchase at the Elephant Corridor page. Congratulations, Marie!

Happy holidays everyone!

We’ve just been back from Bangkok and KL for Bangkok Art Book Fair and KL Art Book Fair. These two fairs are our first experiences to table-ing, and it has been very fun! Hello to everyone from Bangkok and KL visiting the site! :-)

In the fairs, we also first revealed our new publication, which is a colletion of everyone’s stories from our open call, Phaedo. And we’ve been keeping the name to ourselves for a while now, but here it is: Even as a Shadow, Even as a Dream. It’s accessible at our site now!

It has been a tiring few weeks for us, but now we’re slowly getting back to our laptops to reply to your DMs and e-mails. Apologies for not being prompt in our correspondences.

That being said, we’re having our last 2023 sore sore trip next week. We’ll take you with us through Seoul, so do look out for our Instagram updates! See you in 2024! <3

We’re having quite a busy end-of-year!

First of all, we’d like to thank everyone who shared their stories with us. We’re truly honored and touched to read everyone’s stories, and we can’t wait to share that experience with everyone! We’re now currently in the process of replying to your e-mails; should be done by the end of the week. *We might already have a name for the publication!*

Today, after a month of teasing you all with videos and pictures, we *finally* revealed our 2024 Calendar to everyone! This year, still in theme of the non-Chinese calendar, we are highlighting the dragon. The turn of the wheel symbolizes life’s progress and renewal, something that we truly experienced this year. In case you missed our Instagram post, you can also view it in our site here.

Also, a big announcement: we are excited to announce that we will be table-ing in Bangkok Art Book Fair and KL Art Book Fair! These will be our first table-ing experiences and we’re looking forward (nervously, of course) for them. We will also be launching several new stuffs so do look out for that. Fingers crossed everything will go well!

Tiffany, one half of sore sore, also participated in Gueari Galeri’s workshop last September, which resulted in a photobook titled ‘best comes in pairs’. It was exhibited in Jakarta Art Book Fair last October, and on December best comes in pairs will travel to Taiwan to participate in Fotobook DUMMIES Day. best comes in pairs will also come with us to Bangkok and KL, so if you did not get the chance to see it in Jakarta, you can visit us in these three events if you’re around.

Very excited for the days ahead. Hopefully we can meet everyone in person in the near future. Sending everyone prayes of peace and love in the mean time. :-)

*CALL FOR STORIES*

What happens when we, the ‘normal people’, die? Until when will our stories be told?

Phaedo is a collection of stories of the people who have passed, who did not have the chance to share their stories to the world.
It is a time capsule that will remind the world of their existence for the generations that will succeed us.

Sometimes, loss and grief can be too much. But once we are able to process them, sometimes, we can see it as a form of our love for the ones we have lost. We grief because we love them. It such a bittersweet feeling, we think, to be able to grief. We see Phaedo as our attempt to represent that unexpressed love, and we hope that you can share with us your love too.

Our new project, Phaedo (working title) is in search for stories to tell! More details can be found here.

Welcome to the Sore Sore Site!

Thrilled to be sharing with you another piece of us. Aside from our projects, we will also be updating you with our lives and the lives lived within our works. We do hope that this site can bring us closer to you!

And in celebration of the launch of our website, we are finally announcing our new project. Phaedo (working title) is about documenting the human existence; it is about loss and grief, but also about the happiness that it has bestowed upon us.

Also, we are still figuring out our online store. Meanwhile, you can always hit us up on our DMs if you’d like to make a purchase. Tokopedia coming soon maybe?

Cheers to everyone who has stayed with us and enjoyed our objects, both virtually or physically. We do hope that we can deliver more objects in the future, so that we can share with you the delight and beautiful sensations of life into your hands.
